See one dragon, start to finish
Drawing 1 is Y Ddraig Goch, the red dragon on the flag of Wales. All 38 small steps from the book, one at a time.
Grey: already drawn
Red: rub out
Blue: draw now
Step 1 of 38Start with the biggest shape: a tall oval about the size of an egg. Put it in the middle of your paper, a little low, to leave room for the long neck. Press very lightly.Step 2 of 38Draw one long curved line. Start one finger down from the top of the paper, go down through the oval, then sweep out to the left and finish with a curl.Step 3 of 38At the top of the line draw a circle the size of a bottle cap for the head. Then draw two circles the size of a grape for the hips, low on each side of the oval, at the same height.Step 4 of 38Close up of the head. At the bottom of the head circle draw a rounded box about as big as your fingernail for the snout. Add two thin triangles on top for the horns.Step 5 of 38Front legs: a circle the size of a blueberry for each shoulder, low inside the oval, a straight line down, and a jelly bean shape for each foot, about one finger above the bottom of the paper.Step 6 of 38From each hip circle draw a short line down and out, then a long flat oval the size of a paper clip for each foot. Line all four feet up on one level, like they stand on a floor.Step 7 of 38From each shoulder draw a line out to a circle the size of a pea for the elbow, then a longer line up to another pea for the wrist. The left wrist is level with the eyes, the right one a bit lower.Step 8 of 38From each wrist draw long straight lines fanning down. These are the wing fingers. The longest ones reach down to about the middle of the oval.Step 9 of 38The skeleton is done. Now draw the face shape over the head circle: round on top, wider at the cheeks, then in around the snout box from step 4.Step 10 of 38Now the horns. Start each one on top of the head inside its triangle, then curve it up and outward to a sharp point. Do both horns lean out the same way?Step 11 of 38Close up of the head. The head is done, so clean it up now. Rub out the red lines: the head circle, the snout box and the horn triangles.Step 12 of 38Draw the neck with two lines from the head circle down to the oval, letting them flow smoothly into the body. Then draw the curve of the belly along the right of the oval.Step 13 of 38Close up of the front legs. Draw the front legs around the lines from step 5. Make them thick at the top and thinner at the ankle, with round toes at the bottom.Step 14 of 38Close up of the back leg. Draw the back leg on the left around the lines from step 6. The thigh is big and round at the hip circle, then the leg gets narrower down to a wide foot.Step 15 of 38Close up of the back leg. Now the back leg on the right, the same way. Check: do all four feet stand on one ground line?Step 16 of 38All four legs are done. Rub out their red guide lines: the shoulder and hip circles, the straight lines and the foot ovals.Step 17 of 38Close up of the tail. Start where it leaves the body and follow the line from step 2 to the left with three lines: the top edge, the bottom edge, and a stripe between.Step 18 of 38Close up of the tail. Bend all three lines round into the curl, following the end of the line from step 2. Bring the top line in to a sharp hooked tip, like a big C.Step 19 of 38Close up of the wing arm. Draw the left wing arm over the lines from step 7: a thin tube from the shoulder to the elbow and up to the wrist. Add a small hooked thumb at the wrist.Step 20 of 38From the left wrist, draw the first wing finger as two thin lines along the longest guide line from step 8. They meet in a sharp point at the end.Step 21 of 38Close up of the wing arm. Draw the right wing arm the same way: from the shoulder to the elbow, then up to the wrist with a small hooked thumb. It is a little shorter than the left one.Step 22 of 38From the right wrist, draw its first finger as two thin lines down to a point near the bottom. Are both wing tips about the same height as the tail?Step 23 of 38Draw the edge of each wing. It swings from one finger tip to the next in round curves, like the edge of an umbrella.Step 24 of 38Draw the other wing fingers as thin double lines over the guide lines from step 8. Each one runs from the wrist to a point on the wing edge.Step 25 of 38Last clean up. Rub out the red guide lines that are left: the oval, the long curved line and the wing lines. Check first: are the two wings about the same size?Step 26 of 38Close up of the head. Draw two almond shaped eyes halfway down the head, two small nostrils on the snout, and a gentle line for the mouth.Step 27 of 38Draw a row of small spikes down the back of the neck and along the tail. Make them bigger near the body and smaller toward the tip.Step 28 of 38Close up of the front feet. Draw a curved, pointed claw on the end of every toe, on all four feet. Each one looks like a small thorn.Step 29 of 38Close up of the head. Draw the frill around the face and a few curved lines across each horn, like the rings on a shell.Step 30 of 38Draw the wide belly plates down the front of the neck and chest. They look like a stack of flat stripes, widest in the middle.Step 31 of 38Close up of the neck. Draw small scales on the neck and the top of the body. Use tiny U shapes in rows, like a pine cone. You do not need to draw every one.Step 32 of 38Cover the legs and the tail with the same small U shaped scales. Make them smaller near the feet and the tip of the tail.Step 33 of 38Close up of the face and chest. Make the frill around his face spiky with short sharp points. Then draw a V shaped line inside each belly plate, like the veins of a leaf.Step 34 of 38Shade lightly with the side of your pencil. The light comes from the upper left, so shade the right side of each part and inside the wings.Step 35 of 38Press a little harder near the edges and in the folds, where the light cannot reach. This makes the dragon look round.Step 36 of 38Draw a soft shadow on the ground under him. Make it darkest right under the feet.Step 37 of 38Draw the grassy, rocky mound he stands on, with short quick lines for the grass.Step 38 of 38Finish with small flames around his feet and a wisp of fire at his mouth. Your red dragon is done.

Questions parents ask
Is it a printed book or a download?+
It is a PDF download. Nothing is shipped.
Do I need a printer?+
No. Your child reads the steps on a screen and draws on plain paper. Printing is optional. The pages are A4 if you do want to print.
Is it too hard for a younger child?+
Every drawing is broken into small steps, with close ups and colours that show what to draw next. A younger child can work through it with a grown up sitting nearby. The same book still has plenty of detail and shading for an older child.
How long does one dragon take?+
About two to three hours, done over a few sittings. There is no need to finish a dragon in one go.
Can a second child use it?+
Yes. You can use it for the children in your own home.
What if the download does not arrive?+
Check your spam folder first. If it is not there, write to hello@learntodraw.co and we will resend it or fix it. We also refund in full if the file does not reach you and we cannot fix it.
